Family Movie Fails To Interest

"Kannamoochi Yenada", director Priya.V's second outing after her "Kanda Naal Mudhal" (which stayed true to its tagline, 'As refreshing as your morning coffee'), is a pale shadow of her debut movie. While the director can be commended for staying from violence and sleaze that dominate the Tamil movie scene of late, that alone can doesn't make a film good.

The story apparently is inspired (no offence meant) from the Hollywood flick, "Meet Your Parents", but the director has blended it to suit the tastes of Tamil audience. Still, the film fails to sustain your interest because of its weak script. The pacing of the film, in most parts, is uneven and the movie further suffers from the lacklustre songs that could have very well been edited out. The second half, to put it simply, is a drag.

The story is quite simple. Sandhya who falls in love with Prithviraj brings him home to meet her parents. While the rest of the family takes to the boy, her father, (Satyaraj), cold shoulders him (for no obvious reason). This results in a split between Satyaraj and his wife (Radhika) who are on the verge of their 25th wedding anniversary. How Prithviraj brings everyone together forms the rest of this mildly funny movie.

On the acting front, Prithviraj, for whom playing the lover boy has become a regular (and only) thing, offers nothing new. On the other hand, Sandhya, who gave a terrific performance in "Kaadhal", tends to overact in all her scenes. Also, her role is very much neglected in the second half that we never care for her.

Sathyaraj plays his usual flamboyant self but the character is so full of contradictions that it confuses the audience. Radhika plays the ever-supporting mother with elan and finesse. But the major irritant is Sripriya who is so over the top that we simply long for a scene that doesn't involve her. Thank god, that she appears only in the second half.

The script which tries too much to be a full length comedy falls short because the characters are not fully developed and the plot holes are too many. Consider this. Radha Ravi, who plays Prithviraj's uncle and is dead against the affair, does a perfect U-turn in the climax offering no apparent reason. And the climax is such a downer that one wonders if it was intended as a spoof.

However, the film is not without its moments. There are moments when the humor is so spontaneous and natural that one can see the freshness that marked "Kanda Naal Mudhal". Also, the costumes are a delight and suit the characters to a T, especially Satyaraj who looks younger and trimmer.

Many elements in this movie seem to remind us of Priya's previous movie "Kanda Naal Mudhal", be it Yuvan's score or song picturisation or the cinematography (though P.C.Sreeram's was far superior).

Priya seems to have a flair for blending family subjects with humor and also for creating scenes out of real life. She proved it with her debut movie, but falters here because of a 'rushed' script and half-baked characters. If only she had paid more attention to the script, "Kannamoochi Yaenada" would have been a fun-filled family entertainer and also a worthy successor to "Kanda Naal Mudhal".
