Let me tell this at the outset. I have not seen a single episode of "The Simpsons" on TV. This was my first tryst with America's animated, dysfunctional family.
And, after watching the movie, I'm glad, I got introduced to it. The Simpsons Movie is an absolute laugh riot that makes the viewer understand the intelligence that lies behind the stupidty we witness on screen.
The story is as wildly improbable as its characters. But the way it has been told (just like the way the characters have been etched) makes us believe in its absurdity. Consider this. When Springfield's lake gets polluted to extreme levels, the citizens, who are spurred by Lisa Simpson, decide not to dump any waste anymore. But Homer Simpson, true to his nature, dumps his pig's droppings into the lake, thereby turning it into something really bad.
Enter EPA (Environment Protection Agency), which with authorisation from President Schwarzenagger, encloses the whole of Springfield with a dome. When the citizens of Springfield learn that Homer is the eason for their plight, they decide to lynch him. But Homer & family escape to Alaska.
In Alaska, The Simpsons learn that the EPA chief Cargill is going to destroy the whole of Springfield (to create a second Grand Canyon as the present one has become boring). It is now left to homer to save Springfield from destruction and redeem himself.
So, with a story that combines environment and super hero culture, the writers of Simpsons take a dig at everything from Spider-Man to Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth". And the 2D animation, unlike the flood of 3D animated films that we get nowadays, jells perfectly with this movie. And the voice casting is perfect. Some actors have given voice to more than one character, though you wouldn't find it during the movie.
And the numerous sight gags all along makes viewing it great fun. Go for it. It is worth the bucks.
